Fabulous Red & Green Antique Applique Quilt w/Intricate Leaves & Vining Borders

From the early 1850's comes this MUSEUM QUALITY Appliqué quilt.  It's HAND PIECED and HAND APPLIQUED using Turkey Red and medium overdyed green cottons for the appliqué pieces, and bright white cotton for the background.  The red appliqués are cutwork (made like paper snowflakes), and the leaves are very frilly.  The maker also added a vining border with leaves and buds.  Measuring a LARGE 104" x 92", it has a very very thin cotton batting with a few seed fragments, a hand applied red binding, and a bright white back.  HAND QUILTED with angle quilting on the red appliqués, straightline quilting on the block background, outline quilting around the leaves, 1/2" diamond and square quilting on the background, and angle quilting on the borders @ 11 very neat and very tiny stitches per inch counting just one side.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we found no rips, tears, stains or odors, just a color changing in some of the overdyed green leaves (common).  If you're looking for one good quilt to add to your appliqué collection, or you're just starting a collection, YOU'LL LOVE THIS CLEAN MASTERPIECE!!

4 Panel Antique Star of Bethlehem Quilt

This 1860's 4 Panel Star of Bethlehem quilt is HAND PIECED using Turkey Red cotton and an overdyed green print for the Stars, and bright white for the background.  It measures 80" x 76", has a thin cotton batting, a hand applied binding, and a bright white back.  HAND QUILTED with outline quilting inside each of the Star pieces, tiny 3/8" diamond quilting on the background, and running shell quilting on the borders @ 10 neat and tiny stitches per inch counting just one side.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we find no rips, tears, stains or odors, just some thinning of the Turkey Reds (typical of these early quilts).  A CLEAN, BRIGHT, 4 PANEL QUILT!!



Unusual 9 Patch Antique Quilt with 4 Patch Oak Leaf Appliques

WOW, such a wonderful find ~ this 1830's Patchwork quilt with Applique Oak Leaves!!!  HAND PIECED, the maker combined 3-1/2" square 9 patches in colorful black & blue prints on Turkey Red and 11" square blocks with overdyed green Oak Leaves HAND APPLIQUED to a bright white background, and surrounded each block with overdyed green and a bright white sashing.  Measuring an EXTRA LARGE 111" X 103", it has a thin cotton batting with a few seed fragments, a hand applied binding, and a bright white back.  HAND QUILTED with decorative quilting on each oak leaf, outline quilting around each applique, radiating Chevron quilting on the patchwork blocks, running swag quilting on the green background, and ) ) ) ) quilting on the white sashing @ 8 stitches per inch.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we found some fabric splits on the red print used on the borders where the acidic black print ate away the fabric, especially on the corners (normal, see photo), and a couple tiny spots including one brown spot on an overdyed green piece (see photo), but no rips, tears or odors.  CRISP & SELDOM USED, IT'S IN PHENOMENAL CONDITION FOR AN ALMOST 200 YEAR OLD QUILT!!



Antique Love Apple Quilt

This Love Apple quilt appears to be the makers own design!  From the 1930's, it's HAND APPLIQUED using bright red for the apples, medium green for the heart shaped leaves, and a bright white cotton for the background.  Measuring 77" x 66", it has a thin cotton batting, a hand applied sawtooth binding, and a bright white back.  HAND QUILTED with feather wreaths around the apples, square quilting on the applique pieces and background, and running feathers on the border @ 10 neat and tiny stitches per inch counting just one side.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we find no rips, tears, stains or odors.  A BRIGHT, CLEAN, GRAPHIC ONE-OF-A-KIND QUILT!!




1860's 3 Color Grandmas Flower Garden Antique Quilt

I don't believe we've ever had a Flower Garden quilt this early!  From the 1860's, this fine example is HAND PIECED using a black & white shirting print for the centers and sashing, and a brown & white geometric print on rust red and an overdyed green and black stars print for the petals, frame and borders - very striking!  Measuring 94" x 74", it has a thin cotton batting with tiny seed fragments, and an unbleached muslin back.  The binding was made by bringing the border fabric to the back and hand stitching in place.  HAND QUILTED with angle quilting over the entire quilt @ 9 stitches per inch.  In UNUSED, UNWASHED condition, we found no rips, tears or odors, but some light storage staining.  This quilt was part of the 1985-1986 North Carolina Quilt Project and was entry #EF 23.



Unique Basket Variation Antique Quilt

We've had many, many Basket quilts, but this one looks as if it has cockscombs growing out of the baskets ~ VERY FOLKY!  Dating to the 1870's, it's HAND PIECED using Cheddar, overdyed green and Turkey Red for the baskets and a bright white for the background.  The maker also used the 3 main colors as well as white for the six 1" wide borders!  The quilt measures 72" x 72", has a thin cotton batting with a few seed fragments, a hand applied binding, and a white back.  HAND QUILTED with straight line quilting across the pieces, double square and diamond quilting on the background, and triple angle quilting across the borders @ 8 neat and tiny stitches per inch.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we find no rips, tears, stains or odors.  A CLEAN & FABULOUS COLLECTOR QUALITY QUILT!!

Tulip Appliqué Antique Quilt

We just love these 1860's red & green antique quilts, don't you?  This collectors quality example is HAND PIECED & HAND APPLIQUED using Turkey red and dark green for the Tulip appliques, and a bright white for the background.  Measuring 89" x 74", it has a thin cotton batting with seed fragments, a hand applied Turkey red binding, and a bright white back.  PHENOMENAL HAND "STIPPLED" QUILTING, with straightline quilting on the appliques and repeated outline quilting around each applique piece extending to the seams of each block @ 8 stitches per inch.  PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we found no rips, tears, stains or odors, just a SUPER CLEAN, SELDOM USED, CRISP, MINT CONDITION ANTIQUE QUILT!!!

From the Viola Shrader estate comes this VIBRANT 1940's Jacobs Ladder Variation quilt made by Viola in bright rosy pink, green and white cotton fabrics. Measuring 90" x 83", it has a thin cotton batting, a wonderful sawtooth frame, a hand applied white binding, and a bright white back. HAND QUILTED with straightline quilting thru the square blocks, outline quilting on the triangular blocks, and floral quilting on the borders @ 8 stitches per inch. PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED FOR THE FIRST TIME, we found no rips, tears, stains or odors.
