Documented & Dated 1853 Star of Bethlehem Quilt w/Broderie Perse Corners!
Item #S-2293 $7,995
This FABULOUS
quilt was deaccessioned from the Baltimore Museum of Art (the numbers are on 2
back corners) and is a Star of Bethlehem with Broderie Perse corners and Chintz
borders. It's rare to find a Broderie Perse these days, and even rarer to
find one with a Star of Bethlehem center, outlying stars and Sunflowers,
and documented in white embroidery at the top "John Torrence, Made
by his wife, Marietta 1853"!! The Star of Bethlehem is made
of pastel cotton prints and solids. Corner blocks feature stars surrounded
by appliquéd Chintz cut-outs (known as a Broderie Perse), including Parrot
Tulips and roses. Between the Star of Bethlehem's points on 3 sides are
pieced Sunflower blocks, while a diamond frame and Chintz borders on 3
sides finish this exceptional quilt. Measuring 100" x 90", it has a very,
very thin cotton batting, a thin rose colored binding, and a creamy white back.
Stitch in the ditch quilting surrounds each star piece, with angle quilting on
the corner blocks and background @ 9 stitches per inch.
PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED. Someone (the Museum?) has added a
stabilizing strip to the back along the top for display purposes and
painstakingly stitched down the Chintz pieces to preserve the fabric using
thousands of tiny stitches which can be seen from the back. There is some
fabric loss to the Chintz, small splits on the background, a couple stains on
the front, and light staining on the back, but the quilt is in remarkable shape
for being 156 years old!! A RARE & UNIQUE ADDITION TO ANY
COLLECTION!!

1860's Tumbling Block/Stars Antique Crib Quilt
Item #S-2287 $550
This is one of the
earliest crib quilts we've had, and dates to the 1860's to 1880's. It's HAND PIECED using period cotton prints and solids, with the
center star in Turkey Red and a red, white & blue print. Measuring 36" x
36", it has a thin cotton batting, a hand applied piped binding (unusual for a
crib quilt!) and a bright white back. HAND QUILTED with
stitch in the ditch quilting around each piece, and a single leaf quilted on the
white background. PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we
found no rips, tears, stains or odors, just a CLEAN, COLORFUL ANTIQUE
CRIB QUILT!! This quilt came from the same estate as 2 early
Flower Garden quilts that we sold earlier this year.

Antique Broken Stars Quilt with Calico Fabrics
Item #S-2275 $750
Unusual fabrics were
used for this 1860's HAND PIECED Broken Star quilt including
double purple prints, a white double C and floral print on Turkey Red, and
spider mums on cream for the Stars, the spider mum print on tan for the
background, a salmon floral print on chocolate brown for the frame and border,
and a redish brown leaf print on white for the back. Measuring 84" x 82",
it has a very thin cotton batting and the binding was made by bringing the
border fabric to the back and hand stitching in place. HAND
QUILTED with outline quilting inside each star piece, angle quilting on
the background, and straightline quilting along the seam lines on the frame and
borders @ 7 stitches per inch. PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED,
we find no rips, tears or odors, but a couple light storage spots and some old
repairs which might have been done when the quilt was made. CLEAN,
UNUSUAL & VERY GRAPHIC!!

Unused, Unwashed Antique Star Quilt
Item #S-2271 SOLD!!
From the
1870's/1880's comes this HAND PIECED Star quilt using 64 star
blocks measuring 6-1/4" square with overdyed green printed blocks as the
background. The stars are made using many colorful period scrap bag cotton
prints with a creamy white cotton for the background, and a rusty red print for
the borders. The quilt measures 84" x 80", has a thin cotton batting with
seed fragments, a hand applied binding, and an unbleached muslin back.
HAND QUILTED with radiating Chevron quilting on the blocks, and
angle quilting on the borders @ 8 stitches per inch. The maker must have
been anxious to try her new "modern" treadle sewing machine, because the corners
have 5 to 7 lines of machine angle stitching (see photo). In
UNUSED, UNWASHED CONDITION, we find no rips, tears or odors, just a
couple very small pinhead sized spots. BRIGHT & CRISP, A
COLLECTORS DREAM QUILT!!

Early Antique Stars Summer Spread
Item #S-2249 SOLD!!
If only these early
quilts could talk! We know that many quilts were made for Civil War
soldiers and this quilt, HAND PIECED using many cotton scrap
bag prints, certainly fits the time frame. There are 72 Star blocks,
each different, with a pink on pink (double pink) floral sprig print for the
background, borders and backing. The quilt measures 78" x 70", has a
medium weight cotton batting and an invisible binding hidden by Turkey Track
decorative stitching in black yarn. The front is attached to the back by
ties in black & pink yarns in the center of each block (both star and
alternating), and on the corners. It appears to have been quickly made and
is in clean, "as found" condition with no rips, tears, stains or odors and
appears to be unused. A wonderful example of early fabrics!!

white for the borders. It was finished by another generation during the
last half of the 20th century. It measures 88" x 80", has a thin batting,
a hand applied cotton blend binding, and a bright white cotton blend back.

with seed fragments, a white back, and an 1/8" wide binding made by bringing the
backing fabric around to the front and hand stitching in place.
HAND QUILTED with double straightline quilting on the pieced blocks,
square quilting between the star blocks, sunflowers with double square quilting
in the centers on the background blocks, running chevron quilting on the frame,

BRIGHT
quilt, this 1880's Pinwheel Star is HAND

HAND QUILTED
with straightline quilting on the pinwheel/stars, square
quilting on the background, and triple angle quilting across the frames and
