Civil War Era Antique 4 Panel Eagle Applique Quilt w/Urn Borders
Item #A-2263 SOLD!!
Early Eagle quilts are almost impossible to find,
so we were very happy to be able to purchase this fine example. From the
1850-1860's, it's HAND PIECED and HAND APPLIQUED
using an overdyed green print for the eagles, a different overdyed
green print for the flowers, stems and urns, a black & blue print on Turkey Red
for the shields, arrows, tulips and pinwheels, chrome yellow for the floral
tips, and bright white cotton for the background. The 4 eagles have 2
arrows in each claw and are clutching a vine in their beaks, and two borders
have tulips in urns with Trapunto berries. The quilt measures 90" x 87",
has a very thin cotton batting with seed fragments, a hand applied binding, and
a bright white back. HAND QUILTED with diamond quilting
on the eagles, angle quilting on the background, and running feathers and angle
quilting on the borders @ 8 to 10 neat and tiny stitches per inch counting just
one side. PROFESSIONALLY HAND LAUNDERED, we found some
fabric deterioration where the black acidic dye ate away at the Turkey Red
fabric causing tiny holes ("pops") and fabric loss, especially on the ends where
it was tugged and tucked under chins, and a couple very tiny holes (1/4" or
less) on the white background, but no stains or odors.
